Home Buyer Guides/Tips, New Home Communities

Location is an important factor for homebuyers for a variety of reasons. However, for those with children, the decision to purchase a house in a good school district is even more essential. After all, 90% of parents opt to send their kids to public schools.

Attending Your Neighborhood School

Your neighborhood public schools, of course, are supported by both state and federal funding. Therefore, when you choose a neighborhood, it is more than likely that your children will be attending the district’s local schools. This decision of course has a myriad of benefits when it comes to cost and convenience. Further, you and your children will get to meet and spend time with other families in your neighborhood.

Additional Options for Public Schools

However, there are public school options beyond your neighborhood schools. Magnet schools are part of the public school system, but draw students from a wider geographical region than typical schools. However, magnet schools exist outside zoned boundaries. That means that if you decide to send your children to a magnet school, it could potentially open up transportation issues.

Another schooling option comes in the form of the charter schools. For example, charter schools exist in an area between public and private and are publicly funded. State legislators passed charter laws in the 1990s. Over the years, charter schools, often focusing on specialized curriculum, have increased in popularity.

School Location and Your Lifestyle

There is a substantial link between location and your child’s overall educational experience. When you are considering a school, it is important to factor in a child’s academic and social needs. For example, does your child want a lot of extracurricular activities or want to participate in school clubs? If a magnet school is a desirable option, or your family decides to choose a private school, then factors like transportation and travel time become more important. Reduced travel time is one reason that people love moving into areas with great schools, as being able to send your child to a nearby school can translate into less time in the car and more time living life. Many of our neighborhoods are within walking distance of great schools.
